Mercedes Benz is marching onward in its future styling direction with the introduction of the 2010 E-class Coupe. The CLK-coupe name disappears and the replacement will be called the E-class coupe.

Naturally, the E-Class coupe draws heavily on the styling of the 2010 E-Class sedan that was unveiled to the press at the Detroit Auto Show. Gone is the familiar four-oval front end. In its place is a sharper more angular nose with four pointy diamond-like, headlamps and LED running lights that peek out from the lower fascia. Unlike the sedan, however, the coupes wear the three prong star in the grille only.

The coupe's profile has changed considerably from the outgoing CLK. The roof is now so curved, you would be hard pressed to balance a ball on it. In fact, flat panels are few and far between, especially with the busy rear quarter panels. Chrome trim encircles the side windows which follow a practically protracted curve along the roof line. Out back, the car's hind quarters are vaguely reminiscent of Audi's A5, an impression only encouraged by the inclusion of LED tailights.

Inside, the E-class coupe is similiar to the sedan with the exception of the shifter which resides on the console instead of on the column. There is seating for only four occupants with what appears to be a fairly roomy back seat. The controller for the standard Command multimedia interface is perched directly behind the shifter. A panoramic sunroof is standar as well, along with leather sport seats and dual-zone climate control.

Technology that is bountiful in the sedan, also finds its way into the coupe. Standard equipment includes PRE-SAFE, the crash anticipating safety system, and ATTENTION ASSIST - fatigue-sensing system - that helps keep drowry drivers alert. Buyers can also opt for adaptive cruise control, heated and ventilated front seats, and a system that dims the highbeams if the might blind another driver.

When the coupe goes on sale in June two models will be offered, the E350 with a 268-hp 3.5-liter V-6 or the E550 with a 382-hp 5.5-liter V-8. The coupe will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month and a convertible model will make its debut shortly after. Although the CLK had always cost less than the E-class sedan, we're afraid the E-class coupe will cort a bit more than the sedan. We won't know for sure until pricing is announced closer to the car's launch.

After showing off the northern-sounding E-Tron concept at the Frankfurt show last year, Audi has unveiled a second electric sports car concept. Confusingly, it also called the E-Tron.

This may make this news story somewhat baffling, but we shall do our best. The new E-Tron is shorter, lower and narrower than the original E-Tron - think Audi TT rather than R8 - but features a similiar, all-electric drivetrain with lithium-ion batteries mounted behind the driver.

A pair of asynchronous (which we think means 'a bit like that hideous Jedward creation off X-Factor) electric motors develop 201bhp and, like the original E-Tron, an implausible torque figure: 1955lb ft, according to Audi.

However, it emerged that the first E-Tron's 3,319lb ft torque rating was measured at the wheels instead of the output shaft, which meant that, in conventional measurement, it developed something nearer to 250lb ft. So expect the New E-Tron's actual torque figure to read somewhat lower.

In any case, Audi says the new E-Tron will hit 62mph in 5.9 seconds and top out at a limited 124mph, as the drain on the batteries above this speed increases disproportionately. With a weight of 1,350kg - impressively svelte for an electric car, but don't forget it's still a concept - Audi says the E-Tron has a realistic range of 155mph, but we'd guess you'll have to be gentle on the throttle to achieve that. If and when it gets built, that is.

Audi quotes a 40:60 front-rear weight distribution, which, coupled with the short wheelbase and meaty torque, could make the E-Tron a drifty little thing. If and when it gets built, that is.

Far more importantly, we reckon it's handsome thing. If the future's electric, we're happy if it looks like this. Anyone agree?

The Toyota Venza and Honda Accord Crosstour are both the odd ducks of the auto industry. Are they crossovers? Are they SUVs or are they station wagons? Or are they hybrid of all three? Suffice it to say that, despite what automotive analysts always say about Americans hating hatchbacks, it appears that the family sedan might be a design soon relegated to the history books. And there is good reason to see why people are so attracted to these new age stylistic hybrids.

Both the Venza and Crosstour are lower in ride height than your average SUV and this gives them a number of distinct advantages. For one it makes them easier to get into and out of for older people or the disabled. (Think about that aging baby boomers! Knees cargo floors are also lower to the ground making it easier for people like new moms and dads to load that gigantic stroller in the back without getting a hernia.

Even though the Venza and Crosstour are not as tall as most SUVs or crossovers their seating positions are still upright and thanks to tall ceiling architecture the seats are mounted high so you still get that commanding view of the road. All told, are the Venza and Crosstour the future of the automobile? And most importantly for new car buyers looking for a family vehicle, which one is better?

Toyota Venza

Basically a Camry wagon on steroids, the Venza at least has the benefit of a modicum of stylish flair. A unique chrome grille and tail-lamps aping the style of the old Volvo 850 wagon give the Venza a distinct character that is usually so lacking in Toyota products barring the Prius. The look is both muscular and well defined which marks a new design direction for the notably conservative Japanese brand.

After finally losing the top spot on the Le Mans podium to Peugeot last June, Audi is bound and determined to recapture victory this year. To than end the automaker has signed on three new drivers for this year's squad including one Peugeot veteran. Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benogt Treluyer will man Audi's third car in France after a warm-up race at the 1000-kilometer race of Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium in May.

Fassler ran a pair of races for Audi in the American Le Mans Series in 2008, while Lotterer drove one of the privater R10s for the Kolles team last year. Benoit Treluyer was part of the nine-driver Peugeot crew at Le Mans last year.

Audi also released three images of each driver sitting in what may be a new version of the R15 diesel-powered race car dubbed the "R15 TDI Plus." This new version of the R15 is being developed to address official complaints made by rival Peugeot about the original's car design.

The driver images don't show much besides a decidedly sexy naked carbon fiber body, and the "Plus" moniker is a bit misleading as these modifications won't likely help the R15's performance in any way, which would give Peugeot cause for more complaints. With the new car still in devepment and Peugeot not willing to race against a modified version of the 2009 car, don't expect the R15 "Plus" on the starting grid at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March, though Audi is expected to be there testing the new car.

Unlike the A4 convertible that preceded it, the A5 convertible is styled much the same as the A5 two-door coupe. The body styles share the same interior and the same powertrains. Eschewing the folding metal hard tops found in some Swedish, German and Japanesse rivals, the A5 convertible features a fully insulated cloth top with a heated glass rear window. The top's lines roughly follow the roofline of the coupe, unlike many competitors.

At its 2010 launch, the A5 convertible offered a choice of 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged or 3.2-liter V6 engines. Front wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission is standard on the 2.0 TFSI, which also offers a six-speed Titronic automatic transmission with paddle shifters and quattro all-wheel-drive. The V6 model comes only with the Tipronic and quattro.

The 2.0-liter model puts out 211 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. Of torque from its turbocharged, direct-injected powertrain, while the 3.2-liter's V6 is rated at 265 horsepower and 243 lb-ft. Of torque.

Based on a similiar chassis to the A4 and Q5, the A5 features a sport-oriented suspension and an engine mounted further back in the engine bay than in a typical Audi, which gives the car a more even weight distribution for neutral handling.

Inside, the dashboard features Audi's latest MMI with a central display screen located above the radio and audio controls. The leather seats offer a head-level heating system for brisk weather open top motoring.

The A5 Cabriolet features active roll bars behind the seats, front airbags, knee airbags, seat-mounted side head/chest airbags, and ESP stability control. The A5 can also be ordered with an available head-level heating system built into the seats, enabling passenger to drive with the top down in less-than-ideal weather.

Sirius Satellite Radio Connectivity comes standard, as does the 3G MMI (Multi Media Interface), which features 3D map graphics, traffic information, and a joystick-based user interface.

The 2010 Kia Sedona is one of the few minivans still on the market that's available both in short-and long-wheelbase (SWB and LWB) versions. Both models come with three rows of seating, though the arrangements themselves are quite different. The Sedona is related to the Entourgae, from Kia's international partner Hyundai, though the Entourage has only been a long-whellbase van(and isn't even offered for 2010.

Whether you're opting for the base SWB, or LX or LX versions of the LWB version, all 2010 Sedonas are powered by a 244-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6. Although a little coarser-sounding than some of the V-6 engines in rival vans, the engine is relatively smooth and has plenty of torque to move either version quickly with the five-speed automatic transmission-which is smooth but a bit slow to downshift at times. Thanks to revised engine tuning for 2010, the Sedona achieves a slight boost in city fuel economy; it's now rated at 17 mpg city, 23 highway, which is about the same as other minivans.

There's nothing quite like Chysler's trick Swivel n' Go seats on the 2010 Kia Sedona, but long-wheelbase versions have a seven-passanger setup that's quite convenient for those who have to regularly fold the third row down and expand cargo. In those LWB Sedonas, it neatly folds into the floor; however, in the SWB Sedona, it needs to be removed-like minivan models of the past-if you want a flat cargo floor.

Otherwise, the Sedona is simple and straightforward inside, with little detailing or glossy trim, though first-and second-row seats are quite comfortable. The added wheelbase of LWB models brings more cargo space: 33.2 cubic feet behind the third row versus just 12.9 cubic feet in SWB versions-however, the SWB version is a bit easier to maneuver and park.

Nissan Maxima is all-new for the 2010 model year, and this seventh-generation model marks the return of the four-door sports car.

The 2010 Maxima was deliberately built, tuned and aimed at drivers who prefer sporty handling and a firmer ride as opposed to the softer, more luxurious ride associated with many cars in this class.

The Maxima four-door sedan has been part of the Nissan lineup dating back to 1981. Maxima was kicked up a notch when the Altima took over the role as the mainstream sedan and it became the Nissan flagship. This new Maxima now competes directly againts sporty upmarket sedans. Among them: Acura TL, Infiniti G35, Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, and Toyota Avalon, as well as deluxe versions of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The all-new 2010 Nissan Maxima shares shares its D-platform chassis and underpinnings with the other cars and SUVs mounted on the Nissan front-drive platform, including the Murano and Altima. The new Maxima is close in physical measurements to the Altima.

This seventh-generation Maxima is deliberately shorter by a couple of inches in wheelbase and four inches shorter overall, but is slightly lower and wider than the outgoing (pre-2010) model. The track measurement, the width between the tires, is an inch and a half wider, so that the chassis is better able to handle the corners on its big, fat 18-inch tires.

Nissan has modified the platform and body of the Maxima extensively, with one additional stiffness package for the S and SV models, and additional rear reinforcements for the Sport and Premium package versions that uses a large steel panel behind the rear seat to connect the floor,
walls and package shelf into a single, much stiffer unit that Nissan says is up to 17 percent stiffer than the base model is, in turn, 15 percent stiffer than the outgoing 2008 model. Sport versions add a tower brace across the front suspension towers for greater stiffness and steering precision.

INTRODUCTION
There are two types of car shoppers in the world: those who tend to follow the crowd and only consider the best-selling models in any given category and those who prefer to take a rational look at all their choices. If you fall into this second group, the 2010 Kia Optima might be worth considering.
Though this midsize sedan lives in the shadows of heavy hitters like the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry, it still has appeal for value-oriented shoppers.

The Optima delivers the roomy interior that midsize buyers expect, and it's available for less money than some well-equipped economy cars. However, the old adage "you get what you pay for" does apply in this case. The Optima doesn't ride as smoothly as most rivals, and its optional V6 doesn't even make 200 horsepower in a segment full of 270-hp bruisers. Its interior is also a notch below the the class standards for quality and visual appeal.

Other than that, the 2010 Kia Optima is generally pretty easy to like. Do your homework and you'll discover you can buy a top-of-the-line Optima for thousands of dollars less than most comparably equipped competitors. If that aspect appeals to you, the Optima could work out well. BODY STYLES, TRIM LEVELS, AND OPTIONS
The 2010 Kia Optima midsize sedan is offered in base LX, upscale EX and sporty SX trims. The standard features list for the entry-level LX includes 16-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, air-conditioning, 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks, full power accessories, a tilt steering column and a CD/MP3 player audio system with satellite radio and a USB/auxiliary audio input.

Models with the automatic transmission add keyless entry, cruise control and a multifunction tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Move up to the EX and you get 16-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a power driver seat, automatic climate control, a trip computer and an auto-dimming rearvie mirror with a compass.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 receives freshened interior and exterior styling and a new R3 model. This four-passanger sporty coupe is unique for using a rotary engine, which replaces pistons pumping in cylinders with triangular rotors spinning in oval chambers.

It also has rear access doors that don't open independently of the fronts. RX-8 comes in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and R3. RX-8 Has either a 232-hp 1.3-liter rotary engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 212-hp 1.3-liter rotary engine with a 6-speed automatic. The automatic allows manual shifting via floor lever or steering-wheel paddles.

The 2010 Toyota Corolla is a car with two different personalities: There's the base model for budget-conscious buyers and the sporty Corolla XRS for those after a little flair. Comparing both models with their prime rival, the Honda Civic, the base Corolla falls a little short in the performance and styling departments. The XRS does a better job, especially when it comes to power and handling, but loses out to the competition on price.

While the current Corolla is much more attractive than previous generations, one of the car's biggest drawbacks remains its inability to excite the visual senses. The Corolla lacks the sporty and modern panache of many of its rivals, but this may be ideal for those who don't want to stand out from the crowd.

Inside, base Corollas can feel a little cheap, but moving up to the LE adds features such as power windows, whild the XLE gets wood grain trim. The XRS range-topper adds some leather trim and comfy sports bucket seats.

The base 2010 Toyota Corolla and the better-equipped LE and XLE editions continue in 2010 with a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder mill developing 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cobalt, the Toyota is slightly down on power; however, fuel economy for either the standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic is impressive, with an EPA rating of 27 mgp city, 35 highway. The Honda Civic, by comparison, gets 26 mpg city, 34 highway.

2010 Ferrari California

Through a fluke in timing or just plain luck, I'm fortunate enough to have now been behind the wheel of every single current Ferrari currently on sale. That's a rarity even for automotive journalists, and it's an honor I don't take lightly. Today's drive of the California marked a special occasion, since this was not just the only Ferrari I haven't driven, it's also an all-new kind of Ferrari.

The California is full of firsts: it's the first-ever front-mounted V-8-engined Ferrari, it's the first use of direct injection in a Ferrari, and it's Ferrari's first dual-clutch automated manual transmission. It's also the first Ferrari built on a modular architecture, and the first built on a new prodaction line that is downright spooky in its modernity.

I was able to tour the facility last month, and the California's production line is spotlessly clean, eerily quiet, and freakishly automated. On the California seem somehow less special; on the other, it ensures the highest level of quality. I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff, especially for a Ferrari that's inherently less special than some others.

Screeeetch -- less special? I mean the California no insult by that. It's the least expensive offering in Ferrari's stable, but that's only part of the reason why. The other reason is that I equate "special" with "insane." I, a certified automotive nutcase, adore the F430 for its insanity.

I love the way it crackles and barks and screams. I love how it scares small children and grown men alike with its acoustic assault; how it accelerates and shifts with such violence that it renders its passanger hysterical. I love how its occupants are assaulted with the feel of every pebble on the road after luring them in with the sight and aroma of the world's finest materials.

Some, however, might find the F430 a bit much. For these people, Ferrari makes the California. The California is a softer, milder, less insane Ferrari. Ergo, it's less special to crazy people like me, but it's no less special in the real world. A grand tourer in the traditional sense of the word, Ferrari's hard-top convertible is smooth and luxurious. Its sound level and ride are sedate by Ferrari standards, and its cabin elegant and luxurious From the drivers's seat, the experience is typical of today's Ferraris, which means a big red start button, a Mannetino controller on the steering wheel, and a paddle-shifted transmission. Upon first driving off, you notice that the suspension is supple, the gearchanges are smooth, and, like all modern Ferraris, the steering is Cadillac-overboosted and lacking in feel.

2010 Jaguar XJ Overview

The sporty 2010 Jaguar XJ full-size luxury sedan growls with three powerful engine options and exudes luxury, thank to a long overdue redesign inside and out.

The XJ is Jaguar'r flagship sedan and available in four trim levels-base XJ, XJL (long wheelbase), Supercharged and the special-order Supersport. The XJ and XJL are powered by a 358-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8, while the Supercharged and Supersport trims get a supercharged version of this same engine, only the Supercharged puts out 470 horses and can hit 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, while the Supersport tops that with 510 horses and a 4.7 0-60 time. Each option is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with auto-manual mode and, according to the manufacturer, combined fuel economy ratings are 18-19 mpg.

Competing with Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS 460 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class in the full-size luxury sedan segment, the 2010 Jaguar XJ shifts from its distinguished four-headlight design in front to a more sculpted look with wraparound front headlights and vertical tail lamps. The 2010 Jaguar XJ features a lightweight aluminum body that is at least 300 pounds lighter than a traditional steel body and rests on 18- or 19-inch wheels, an air-spring suspensim and automatically controlled shock absorbers for a smoother, more comfortable ride.

The interior gets a more modern treatment with a panoramic glass roof, chrome surfaces and leather seats. Trunk volume is 15.2 cubic feet and the long-wheelbase version gets an extra five inches of backseat legroom. A premium 1200-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system is standard on the Supercharged and Supersport models. Audi is Launching a New 2010 Q7 With New Enhancements

Audi is launching a new luxury all-terrain Q7 SUV with new visual and mechanical benefits promised. Delivery lead time is likely to be July 2009. This new Q7 combines seven seat practicality with quattro four-wheel drive and variable height adaptive air suspension technology, for genuine off-road capability.

The new range also offers for the first time an ultra-low emission, EU6 compliant TDI model using an AdBlue additive to eradicate virtually all harmful nitrous oxides from emissions and already meets the stringent EU regulations applicable from 2014.

The engine range offers 3.0 TDI, 4.2 TDI V8 and 6.0 V12 TDI diesel versions and 3.6 FSI V6 and 4.2 FSI V8 direct injection petrol units. The new Q7 3.0 TDI (233PS) "clean diesel" version also offers 31.7 mgp on the combined fuel cycle. 2010 Chevrolet Equinox SUV Refined, Stylish

Chevrolet's sport utility vehicle named for the first day of spring had a rebirth this year, and the resulting 2010 Equinox is the best ever.

A crossover SUV that's based on a car-like chassis, the Equinox has stylish new looks, a refined ride, handsome interior and new, more fuel efficient engines.

The face borrows from the attractive front styling of the Chevy Malibu sedan and Chevy Traverse SUV. A two-tier grille and prominent hood, plus graceful side lines, create an attractive-looking SUV that makes even the Honda CR-V look a bit dowdy.

A compact SUV since it debuted im 2005, the Equinox also grew an inch here and there this year and looks on the outside larger and more substantial than before.

Best of all, the addition of a fuel-sipping four-cylinder engine gives it a better fuel economy rating-22 miles per gallon in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway-than the top-selling Toyota RAV4 and the CR-V.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $23, 185 is lower than last year because of the smaller, base engine. But it's a tad higher than the starting retail prices for the new CR-V, at $22,255, and the new RAV4, at $22,300. All prices are for base models with four-cylinder engines, automatic transmissions and two-wheel drive.

The lowest-priced, 2010 Equinox with all-whell drive starts at $24,935.

The interior is new, with nicely styled center stack of controls, comfortable seats and ice blue ambient lighting. Sure, there's a lot of hard plastic in there but fit and finish on the tester were excellent, and controls were ergonomically designed and easy to operate.

The ride was what impressed me most. Compared with the clumsy-feeling suspension of the old Equinox, the ride in the new model is downright refined.

The suspension-independent front struts and independent four link at the back-managed road bumps well, with just a few ba-boom sounds on rough stuff.

Nissan Plans Micra-Based Sedan

Japanese auto maker Nissan Motor Company, which plans to launch a compact car - the Micra - in India after six months, today showcased a sedan. The car is to be built on the same platfrom as the compact car, but will not serve the low-cost concept.

Senior officials of Nissan Motor stated that the company had largely frozen the design and concept of the sedan, which will be positioned as a premium product that would perhaps take on the likes of Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis.

The sedan would be launched in 2011. It incorporates futuristic styling, including large swooping headlights, tight lines running on the side doors, aggressive front facia and a sporty-looking but compact boot.

The company also displayed pictures of its yet-to-be-named compact car to reporters. Nissan is gearing up to launch the new compact car in May 2010 from the Chennai manufacturing facility, which is equally owned by French car maker Renault. The trial production of the small car - which will compete with Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki A-star and Chevrolet Spark, among other models - will begin next month.

Reporters were also shown pictures of a third model which would be positioned as a multi-purpose vehicle. This third vehicle, also to be made on the same platfrom, may or may not be sold in India as the company is yet to take a decision on the same.

2010 Honda Accord Sedan Review

Although the Coupe and Sedan versions of the 2010 Honda Accord appeal to different types of buyers, they both have the more chiseled yet voluptuous look introduced the latest redesign of this model for 2008. With styling that carries over virtually unchanged, both models still manage to look quite fashionable and contemporary for affordable, no-fuss transportation.

The 2010 Honda Accord has a softer, more conservative appeal than its coupe cousin, but it's still an attractive vehicle. Edmunds sings the Accord Sedan's praises, declaring its "eye-catching styling proves that reliable transportation doesn't have to be bland." According to Kelley Blue Book, "a bolder front end, deeper side sculpting and more pronounced fender flares give the all-ndw 2009 Honda Accord Sedan a crisper, more substantial look."

Cars.com describes the Accord Sedan as "a bit anonymous from certain angles," adding that it is "as assertive as the coupe when viewed head-on, but it loses some presence as you move around to the sides and rear." Car and Driver laments the loss of "the distinctive greenhouse shape and some of the edgy quality" that used to be shared with the coupe in previous, noting "Honda, obviously, remaims convinced sedans must offer a softer and gentler profile."

The Accord Coupe is definitely more of an attention-getter, and most reviewers take heed. Cars.com notes the Coupe's "chiseled look that's highlighted in front by a narrow mesh grille and bulging front fenders." Both Cars.com and Edmunds point out that the Coupe's hindquarters, with a distinctive kink in the C-pillar and taillights that wrap around the side of the body, are reminiscent of the BMW 5-Series.

Jalopnik is not as enthusiastic as other reviewers regarding the Coupe's exterior or interior esthetics, saying, "In places the 2009 Honda Accord Coupe is woefully bland, in others awkwardly edgy." While they claim that the interior is "positively posh," they're not too crazy about the grayish plastic dashboard and "cornucopia" of buttons, whicg are "awkwardly unintuive" and clash with the nice leather.

The interior of both models receives mixed reviews, with Cars.com asserting that the Accord's "faux aluminum trim has a nice matte finish, but its appereance is not very convincing," while Edmunds considers the "design...simple yet handsome." Motor Trend likes the look of the seamless matte finish and silver gray plastics in the Accord Coupe and sayst that "the new Accord's dash display are MacBook Pro all the way."

The reviewer also favors the Accord Coupe's cabin: "Homda has always done tight panels and high quality surfaces, but with the new Accord Coupe they've really outdone themselves." ConsumerGuide remarks that the wood-grain accents offered in some Accord sedanr "go a long way toward creating a warm, upscale ambiance, [but] some testers found models without woodgrain trim lacked character."

LA 2009: 2011 Ford Fiesta Hatchback Arrives in North America... Finally

Ford has just officially revealed the North American market version of the Fiesta hatchback, its widely popular and successful model currently on sale in Europe.

Debuting alongside the hatch, is an all-new Fiesta sedan, designed specifically for North America. The Fiesta marks Ford's return to the sub-compact segment for the first time in over a decade.

We can't say the style of the car is as pleasing as the Euro-spec model (which we love), but it is close and retains most of that car's sporty and youthful character. It also retains the high-grade interior with the Motorola Razor-inspired dash.

Under the hood of the Fiesta, we're glad to see the peppy 119-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine has been carried over from the European model. It makes 109 ft-lbs of torque and in our test of the Euro-spec model provided plenty of fun.

This engine also delivers impressive fuel-economy with a best-in-class rating of 40 mpg on the highway. This is in part due to a new six-speed automatic transmission, while a five-speed manual will also be offered.

Ford also promises that the car's European driving dynamics have been retained thanks to an electronic power steering system that is not only responsive but helps to reduce fuel consumption.

The suspension setup is a MacPherson Strut front design with a 22mm sway bar and a rear twist-beam setup. A set of 15-inch wheels will be standard with 16s optional. There will even be a set of 17-inchers made available through Ford Racing.

MARINER: A 171 horsepower 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine replaces last years's 2.3 as the base engine; the Mariner Hybrid uses an Atkinson-cycle version of the new engine. The optimal 3.0 liter V6 has been updated for more power and better fuel economy.

New low-rolling-resistance tires, electric (in place of engine-driven) power steering, refined aerodynamics and a 6-speed automatic transmission (which replace last year's 4-speed) also help improve fuel economy. Ford's EasyFuek capless refueling system is now standard, and the suspension has been tweaked to improve ride comfort and handling.

MILAN: Electronic stability control is now standard across the line. Milan Premiere models get ambient interior lighting, SIRIUS satellite radio, and an automatic transmission as standard equipment. A new VOGA package includes white or black paint with chrome wheels and trim, cashmere-colored leather seats and door inserts, "Carbon Cyber Grey" interior trim, and VOGA badging on seats, body, wheels and floor mats. A new version of the Milan, including the long-awaited hybrid version, is coming in 2009 as 2010 model.

BMW Won 2 Awards Scottish Car of The Year

BMW is celebrating, as it won 2 categories on the 2009 Scottish Car of the Year Awards. Its Jury was made by the ASMW (Association of Scottish Motoring Writers). The Z4, in this concurs got the Scottish Drop Top 2009 award; BMW got crowned, winning the Eco section for the EfficientDynamics program.

Bill Caven - ASMW's President said 'The Z4 boasts a fine pedigree of high performancd and thrills which few can match. Matched with briliant build quality and a slick folding roof mechanism this is the ultimate Scottish driving machine'.

Caven said about the program introduced 1st in 2007 'Different manufacturers have created different solutions to provide cleaner more efficient motoring, but BMW with its EfficientDynamics programmes have certainly provided a breath of fresh air in making us more aware of what clean should mean'.

Tim Abbott, the Managing Director of BMW Group UK accepted the prize saying: 'The Z4 has enjoyed high praise since its launch back in May and this award recognises its technical prowess and cements its position as one of the best roadters on the market.

RIP Jaguar X-Type: Putting The Kitten To Sleep, At Last

Many histories of Jaguar have been written, and no doubt there will be many more. In most of them, the sad saga of the Jaguar X-Type sedan is likely to be covered as a misguided diversion--if it's spoken of at all.

While the smallest Jaguar sedan was pulled from the US market after the 2008 model year, it has lived on in the UK and Europe. Now Jaguar has announced that production will end for good in December, six months early, to cut costs in the global economic downturn.

Launched in 2002 as the car that would build Jaguar into a high-volume competitor to BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus, the X-Type was instead something of a disaster. Eagerly anticipated, it never came close to the Jaguar image of fast, elegant, sporty sedans.

Even in its best year, X-Type sales were just a fraction of projections. In the US, it suffered the indignity of losing its residual value faster than any other model on the market--including low-budget entries from the likes of Kia and Mitsubishi.

Part of the blame can be placed on Jaguar's owner, Ford Motor Company, which chose to put the X-Type on a platform shared with the Mondeo, its midsize sedan for the European market. This cut development costs, but the result was hardly a Jaguar.

To give the transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive car proper (rear-wheel-drive) Jaguar grip, all-whell-drive was engineered into the car. All US models were sold that way, fitted with either a 2.5-liter or 3.0-liter V6 (the European range included front-wheel-drive, four-cylinder, and turbodiesel models).

The all-wheel-drive meant the X-Type was heavy for its size, and the ultra-conservative styling did nothing to make it stand out in a crowd of midsize sedans. Reviews were tepid at best, and initial excitement quickly turned into indifference. A short-lived station wagon version, Jaguar's first ever, did nothing to help.

Jaguar built more than 350,000 X-Types in eight years, making the marque's highest-volume model. But the future of the brand under new owner Tata Industries is an a very different direction.

Starting with the 2009 Jaguar XF, and the just-revealed 2010 Jaguar XJ, the cars will have distinctive cutting-edge styling, features unique to the marque, and be built in lower volumes.

The X-Type offered none of those characteristics, and so the sooner it passes into history, the better for the brand.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Crowned Top Luxury Saloon

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been voted as the best saloon on offer in the luxury market by readers of the magazine Auto Zeitung.

Almost 105,000 readers cast their opinions on the best cars of the year in a host of segments, with the E-Class taking the 'Auto Trophy' by beating off the challenge of 19 rivals.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz also received to honours in the best super sports car category thanks to the new SLS AMG.

The vehicle held off 18 competitors, with the accolade adding to the Golden Steering Wheel Award it was granted earlier this month by consumers of German motoring magazine Auto Bild and newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executivd Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales and Marketing, were on hand in Berlin to accept the prizes.

The outcome also builds on the result of the same vote last year when the Mercedes-Benz GLK was recognised, while the R-Class and S-Class both picked up honours in 2007.

Among the changes made to the latest edition of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon compared to past offerings is that it has a more muscular and athletic design.

Nissan's 2010 ECU Update Demystified - Launch Control 2.0

Nissan North America's campaign to update willing GT-R owner's ECUs with the new 2010 firmware has already begun with one enthusiast, Matt "MC" from the North American GT-R Owners Club (NAGTROC), already taking them up on the offer. In the name of science he's volunteered to have his GT-R go under the knife (so to speak) for the update and report back on the changes.

Matt's report on the changes has demystified the workings in terms of the much rumoured launch control functions. First up the launch control is not gone, but it is modified. It is no longer a launch from 4,500rpm and it no longer requires the VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) to be disengaged to function. That's right the new launch control functions with VDC ON. It even functions with the gearbox in automatic mode.

So how does it work, you hold the brake on and floor the accelerator. The car revs to 3,000rpm and holds it there. Release the brake and off you go.

Matt has already tested this with a passenger in the car in manual mode and it's good for 3.8's 0-60mpg times. Without a passenger, in auto mode or on a better surface perhaps it's good for 3.7 seconds or faster. More testing ir required.

The prime issue Nissan seemed to have with the launch control in the 2009 GT-R was the fact that to do it VDC hae to be turned off, something the owners manual forbade. Now the launch is much more gentle but the effect is reported to be 80% as potent.

So if guys were hitting 11.6 second quarter mile ETs without launch control before the change, it will be interesting to see what they hit with this revised VDC ON version of the launch control.

Audi A1 Cabriolet Coming to The 2010 Geneva Motor Show

As you may know already, Audi announced that this October it will begin building the A1, right after it will be unveiled at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show but appears that this is not the only plan of the German manufacturer!

According to our sources from Audi, a convertible version of the A1 is also in the works because the Germans want to take on Mini Cabrio segment and ruin their sales.

First Look: 2010 Jaguar XJ

Jaguar has just unveiled its new XJ flagship to the public in a celebrity-filled extravaganza hosted by everyone's favorite car guy -- Jay Leno -- in London. We got an embargoed sneak peek a bit ahead of time of the new Jag flagship, which is set to hit U.S shores this December, beginning from the top floor of one of those photogenic English manors in the suburbs of London you see in Victorian-period-piece movies.

This location allowed design chief lan Callum to show off the luxury sedan's plan view and thus its most controversial feature, its pianno-black trim. While piano black is almost a cliche on luxury-sedan dashboards, you don't find it outside..until now. The 2010 Jaguar XJ features a piece of the trim on the roof rails connecting the C-pillar to the other edge of the rear quarter-window.

The piano-black trim, which shows up only close up on metallic black or British Racing Green paint, stands out like a piece of protective-trim covering on virtually any other paint color...silver, for example.

An overhead view shows how it connects the side glass with the standard panoramic two-panel sunroof. Controversial styling extends to the tail and trunklid, which look more than a bit like those on italy's Lancia Thesis luxury sedan, though Jaguar insists it just takes getting used to.

You'll recognize the 2010 Jaguar XJ's nose as a more upright follow-up to last year's sensation, the XF. On the bigger XJ, which is about the same size as the more formal-looking sedan it replaces, the rectangular grille is even more resolved and the cat's-eye headlamps are even sleeker. As with the XF, there's no Leaper hood ornament, though it will be offered in North America, in case you're considering an aftermarket vinyl top as well.

"Surface tension" in the profile pays homage to Chris Bangle's "flame surfacing" as does just about everything new in the car business these days. While the roofline suggests a "four-door coupe" in the idiom of Mercedes' CLS-Class, rear-seat headroom, even with the standard two-panel sunroof, is quite good. The XJ is a bigger car than it looks. Jaguar worked hard on the sedan's aerodynamics, for high-speed stability and low wind noise and fuel effiency.

Mazda RX-7 Rumors Resurface

Reports of a revived Mazda RX-7 have been swirling through the internet rumor mill for about three years now, but the reborn sports car could be on the verge of finally getting the production nod.

Mazda design chief Ikua Maeda has reportedly already sketched out the new-age RX-7, and is currently presenting his ideas to Mazda' board of directors. The new RX-7 would essentially replace the RX-8 in Mazda's lineup, but the Japanese automaker has decided to can the RX-9 nameplate for production.

The new RX-7 would continue Mazda's tradition of rotary engines, featuring an updated 1.6L unit, according to AutoExpress. Fitting is planning to turbocharge the new engine, resulting in at least 300 horsepower and a 0-60 time likely under 5 seconds.

Although the RX-7 will undoubtedly have the shape of a coupe, the car's final body style has yet to be determined. Two designs are said to be on the drawing board-a true two-seater and a 2+2 with a three-door design like the current RX-8.

If give the green light, the new-age RX-7 could surface at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, followed by a roll-out in 2012.

With the 2009 Audi facelift now on sale and the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class just a month away from hitting showrooms, attention now turns to the next-generation BMW 5-Series.

A class leader since its inception, the 5-Series Sedan and Touring wagon remain crucial vehicles in BMW's lineup and with the next-gen versions now just months away speculation about the final design has been heating up.

The new-Series Sedan is set to arrive in late 2009 for the 2010 model year and heavily disguised prototypes have already been testing around the streets of Munich. While those prototypes revealed few details, the latest computer generated rendering gives us a clear indication as to what to expect for the new executive wagon.

Most of the planned changes are skin-deep. Under the new sheet metal, BMW will continue with its new found love of turbocharging. The new 4.4L twin-turbo V8 from the recently revealed X6 is expected to appear in a range topping model, while more turbo-diesel variants are expected to join the lineup as well.

BMW is currently developing its second generation common rail system for its diesel powerplants, which will operate at greater pressure for improved performance.

The transmission systems will include a six-speed manual and a six-speed Steptronic semi-auto gearbox, however a new eight-speed unit from ZF is also expected to be available.

Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweigh materials including carbon-fiber and aluminum. The car's construction will be a hybrid of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section, and traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear.

This will ensure a favorable front-to-rear weight distribution and improved handling. Up front will be an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with a multi-link layout for the rear. High-performance models will include carbon-fiber body panels to shed even more weight.

The all-new Kia 2010 Forte signals that Kia is ready to compete for top honors in the hugely crowded compact sedan segment. While it's not a ; =rfect vehicle (what is?), the 2010 Kia Forte makes and backs it up with a wealth of features and impresive levels of comfort and quality. Most top review sources, along with the editors at TheCarConnection.com, think that the Forte is a very good-looking small sedan.

The 2010 Kia Forte is Kia's "new bread-and-butter car that replaces the Spectra," according to Motor Trend, and it will arrive levels: the base spec LX, the volume EX...and the top trim SX." The Kia 2010 Forte features an all-new design that is very well-received in reviews surveyed by TheCarConnection.com.

Edmunds raves that the Kia Forte boasts an "attractive exterior design," and even goes so far as to say "the Forte is undoubtedly one of the best-looking small sedans on the market." Cars.com is more reserved, remarking that "if you've experienced Honda's Civic, the car will seem very familiar," especially in terms of overall styling.

Inside, the Kia Forte's cabin doesn't quite make the same impression as the exterior sheetmetal. While Motor Trend reviewers like that the Kia Forte's "center stack is clean and uncluttered," Edmunds contends that the "interior doesn't raise the bar for this segment." That's not to say the interior is a disappointment, just not quite as pleasing as the exterior.

Automobile Magazine does appreciate that the "cabin is nicely appointed, with cloth or leather seats," and both Edmunds and Motor Trend approve of the "clean layout" of the Kia Forte's dashboard.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox SUV Refined, Stylish

Chevrolet's sport utility vehicle named for the first day of spring had a rebirth this year, and the resulting 2010 Equinox is the best ever.

A crossover SUV that's based on a car-like chassis, the Equinox has stylish new looks, a refined ride, handsome interior and new, more fuel efficient engines.

The face borrows from the attractive front styling of the Chevy Malibu sedan and Chevy Traverse SUV. A two-tier grille and prominent hood, plus graceful side lines, create an attractive-looking SUV that makes even the Honda CR-V look a bit dowdy.

A compact SUV since it debuted in 2005, the Equinox also grew an inch here and there this year and looks on the outside larger and more substantial than before.

Best of all, the addition of a fuel-sipping four-cylinder engine gives it a better fuel economy rating-22 miles per gallon in city driving and 32 mgp on the highway-than the top-selling Toyota RAV4 and the CR-V.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $23, 185 is lower than last year because of the smaller, base engine.

But it's a tad higher than the starting retail prices for the new CR-V, at $22,255, and the new RAV4, at $22,300. All prices are for base models with four-cylinder engines, automatic transmissions and two-wheel drive.

The lowest-priced, 2010 Equinox with all-wheel drive starts at $24,935.

The interior is new, with nicely styled center stack of controls, comfortable seath and ice blue ambient lighting. Sure, there's a lot of hard plastic in there but fit and finish on the tester were excellent, and controls were ergonomically designed and easy to operate.

The ride was what impressed me most. Compared with the clumsy-feeling suspension of the old Equinox, the ride in the new model is downright refined.

The suspension-indenpendent front struts and independent four link at the back-managed road bumps well, with just a few ba-boom sounds on rough stuff.

2010 Ford Mustang V6-Second Short Take

The 2010 V-6 Mustang may have been redesigned, but its specific output makes it seem like a relic. In this segment, both the Chevrolet Camaro and the Hyundai Genesis couple offer V-6s of smaller displacement that nevertheless make more horsepower and more torque.

Chevy gets 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet from 3.6 liters; Hyundai gets 306 and 266 from 3.8. The Ford manages only 210 horses and 240 pound-feet from 4.0 liters.

That may be because the Mustang' s V-6 dates from the first Bush administration. Ford reengineered the six in 1997, switching the valvetrain from pushrods to overhead cams.

The output was, and has been horsepower. In 13 years, don' t you think Ford should have been able to find-we don' t know-10 more ponies?

In this 3421-pound Mustang, 210 horses produce a 6.6-second 0-to-60 time (V-6 Accords will walk all over this pony car).

The Genesis and the Camaro are both quicker to that mark by 1.1 and 0.7 second, respectively. And although the Mustang is 386 pounds lighter, it stops nine feet later than the Camaro, at 182 feet. We got 19 mpg for both American; the Korean got 18.

The GT model, when fitted with the Track package, effectively hides the Mustang' s cost-conscious solid rear axle. The base suspension in the V-6 occasionally sounds like a John Bonham drum solo as it works to keep the tires in contact with the road.

When pushing the Mustang to its limits, initial turn-in is preceded by a healthy change in pitch, then a change in vector. Fact is, we prefer those operations in the converse order.

Starting at $21,845, the Mustang undercuts the Camaro by about $2000 and the Genesis coupe 3.8 by almost $4000. And that makes the Mustang a great value to the demographic group that cares only for looks. We are not among it.

AUDI A6 SEDAN

The car received a significant 'facelift' for the 2009 model yeas onward, with a middly revised frond end and a heavily restyled rear. The rear is characterized by new taillights, complete with LED clusters that provide better reliability, visability, and asthetics.

The taillights have been augmented with R8-inspired lenses that effectively cut through the haze of blowing snow. The facelift also consist of a slightly resigned front bumper, new rectangular fog lamps and larger air-intakes left and right of the grille.

The most basic models can be had with front-wheel-drive, but most come equipped with the company's Quattro all-wheel-drive. The A6 also features Audi's Multi Media Interface (MMI), which provides access to a number of functions via a computer screen, rather than buttons and dials.

Engine choices in the United States range from a 3.2-liter to a 4.2-liter V8. The V6 model delivers 255 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 243 pound-feet of torque at 3250 rpm. The more powerful V8 model cranks out 350 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 325 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm.

The A6 can be ordered with a seven-speed multitronic CVT transmission or a regular six-speed automatic. (All-wheel-drive is not available on the CVT model.)

High-tech features include active bi-xenon headlights that point in the direction of a corner, and the new Multi Media Interface (MMI) that provides access to settings for in-car entertainment, satellite navigation, climate control, suspension configuration, and so on.

Nissan Micra Production Increases Due To Scrappage Scheme

Nissan's Sunderland Plant is feeling the benefits of the UK scrappage scheme with a 40% increase in Nissan Micra production.

The news comes as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that UK vehicle production has slowed to it slowest rate of decline in September 2009 since the crisis began.

Around 11,000 Nissan Micras rolled off the line making it a bumper month for the supermini, which has proved a hit with not only the Scrappage Scheme launched by the Government but Nissan's own extended scheme.

Launched to coincide with the Government Scheme in April 2009, Nissan's extended Trade-in offer provides a minimum £2,000 trade in to any owner of a car aged 8-10 years when purchasing a Sunderland built Nissan.

As well as offering the savings to a wider range of potential buyers, it also aims to sustain the uplift in sales enjoyed by the company in recent months.

Sales of Nissan Micra topped 10,445 across Europe in September 2009, an increase of 4% on last year making it Nissan's second best selling model.

But The Nissan Micra's not the only Sunderland Plant model doing well, Nissan Qashqai sales were up 15% last month year on year with a strong customer order bank which continues to exceed expectations.

Trevor Mann, Senior Vice President Manufacturing, Nissan Europe: "The scrappage incentives have brought sales that wouldn't normally have been generated with Micra proving one of the most popular.

"Both the Government's and Nissan's own schemes have stimulated the market and allowed us to protect jobs at the plant and in the dealer network.

"The boost to production has been very welcome but we need to remain cautious as scrappage incentives are scheduled to come to an end shortly.

"We will continue to monitor the markdt and adjust our production plan accordingly."

The Nissan Qashqai Voted Third in Customer Satisfaction Study

The class leading quality of Nissan's British built models has once again been recognised by the car buying public in the J.D. Power Vehicle Owners Satisfaction Study.

Earlier this month Nissan was celebrating an 11th place overall ranking for the Nissan Qashqai in the J.D. Power/What Car? 2009 UK study, and now this achievement has been complemented by a third place rating in the German survey. Sweeping aside the competition in both the SUV and C-segment classes, the British built cross-over model posted an overal satisfaction rating of 85.8% to finish third out of 113 ranked models.

Blurring traditional class boundaries, the Nissan Qashqai has comfortably bettered SUVs including the Mercedes Benz M-Class, Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Touareg. The Nissan Qashqai also outranked its key competitors in the C-segment, including the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Renault Menage.

In what is Germany's biggest customer survey, the Nissan Qashqai was the only vehicle in the SUV class to score an 'excellent' rating. A total of 16,425 drivers of 113 models from 27 brands were intervied in the Vehicle Owners Satisfaction Study.

J.D. Power calculated the satisfaction of drivers considering quality, desirability, service and costs, attributing a different weight to each of these categories. The Nissan Qashqai had outstanding results in mechanics, performance, vehicle body and maintenance costs.

The only Japanese brand in the top five, Nissan's quality has been rated as equal or superior to premium badged rivals.

Senior Vice President, manufacturing, purchasing and supply chain management for Nissan Europe, Trevor Mann comments: "Having the superb quality and owner satisfaction offered by Qashqai recognised in such a significant export market is fantastic news. That Nissan drivers in Germany rate our car's quality as superior to the majority of premium badged German cars is a tribute to the UK's design, engineering and manufacturing expertise."

While it featured for the first time in the UK top ten best selling cars list in May 2009, the Quashqai isn't Nissan's only current success story. The recently revised Nissan Note finished third in its class, with drivers recognising large car quality in a small car package. Despite having a starting price of only £9,990, the Nissan Note recorddd an overall score of 83.0 per cent-an identical satisfaction rating to the MINI.

The perfectly formed Nissan Note is built alongside the Nissan Qashqai at Nissan's Sunderland plant, proving not only the high quality offered across the Japanese brand's range, but also the strength in depth of Britain's automotive exports.

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. Said on Tuesday it aims to sell 36,000 units a year of its new hybrid Sai sedan in Japan, taking another step towards its goal of selling 1 million hybrid vehicles annually worlwide soon after 2010.

The Sai is the second hybrid-only model under the Toyota brand after the Prius and is a repackaged version of the Lexus HS250h, which went on sale in June.

The Sai is bigger and more expensive than the Prius and will go on sale in Japan on Dec. 7. Prices will start at 3.38 million yen ($37.290), compared with the HS250h's starting price of 3.96 million yen.

Toyota said it had no plans to export the Sai, which will be built by unit Toyota Motor Kyushu in southern Japan.

The Sai has a listed mileage of 23 km/liter (54 mgp), or twice that of a comparable gasoline car, chief engineer Shigeru Nakagawa told a news conference.

Toyota said the Sai concept was derived from a Japanese character meaning talent and coloration.

Toyota is still miles ahead of competitors in the fast-growing hybrid field, which has enjoyed tailwinds especially in Japan thanks to generous subsidies and reduced taxes on cleaner cars.

It expects to sell 500,000 to 600,000 hybrid vehicles globally this year, while facing a short-term battery supply bottleneck for anything further.

Korean Launch

Toyota also on Tuesday launched its brand in South Korea, a market dominated by Hyunday Motor Co. And affiliate Kia Motors.

Toyota will sell the Prius and Camry hybrids, as well as the RAV4 sports utility vehicle and non-hybrid version of the Camry, its most popular sedan.

Toyota expects to sell a combined 500 vehicles per month initially in South Korea, and ims to raise that to a still-modest 700 units beginning in 2010.

"The introduction of the Toyota brand into South Korea is aimed to meet the diversifying needs of consumers in this growing market," Toyota Excecutive Vice President Yukitoshi Funo told a news conference.

Hyunday has been grabbing market share globally from Toyota and other major automakers, winning over customers with its line of cheap, fuel-efficient models and catchy marketing campaigns.

In July, Hyundai launched its first hybrid in the South Korean market, a liquefied petroleum gas-electric vehicle, and is due to launch its first gasoline-electric hybrid, a version of the flagship Sonata, in the latter half of 2010.

2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo Review

The striking 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, a¿breviated to "GT" on its tailgate, blends some station-wagon and SUV cues into a shape that's not quite sedan or crossover. It's most accurately called a fastback, a vehicle description that's all but lost its meaning since the 1970. Kelley Blue Book asks the same question, noting, "it's certainly not an SUV," while Motor Trend points out, "to the enthusiast a Gran Turismo is something low and fast and usually made in italy."

For the sake argument, TheCarConnection.com calls the GT a wagon, and it's likely the EPA will do the same. That settled, it's not quite attractive to most reviews arround the Web, though TCC's editors have warmed to the tall roof.

There's a reason for the proportions: "BMW executives decreed it should offer the legroom of a 7-series and the rear headroom of an X5," Car and Driver reports, and "given those two goals, it's no wonder this new model is no classic beatuy." Autoblog says, "we wouldn't use the word 'elegant' to describe this vehicle's styling," and Edmunds snipes, "If anyone looks straight on at the rear end of the BMW 5 GT and uses the adjective 'sexy' or 'handsome,' then we must have changed planets."

Though its proportions lean toward those of the BMW X6 sport-ute, the GT sits lower to the ground, and its frameless doors emphasize the long descent of the roofline. Like the X6, it has a thick, tall tail, though here designers visually decrease the rear end's heft with downturned taillamps and chrome details.

Kelly Blue Book observes it "lacks any sense of ruggedness or off-road pretense," while also noting it "features a sloping roofline that greatly reduces its functionality compared to a wagon." Edmunds states bluntly, "the full-on rear vidw is just not pleasing to the eye." Still, reviewers like Kelley Blue Book appreciate the GT more than in photos, asserting it "works better in person that pictures might imply."

2010 Hyundai Tucson iX Unveiled Review

Hyundai's new Tucson ix was officially unveiled today. The compact sports utility vehicle has sweeping coupe-like lines, a premium vehicle feel and comes with features unavailable on its predecessor.

Sales in the Korean market today, Hyundai aims to set the trend for the segment and regain sales leadership in the small SUV market.

Its revolutionary features begin with the exterior styling which is based on the bold ix-onic concept shown at Geneva Motor Show in March. The power output, fuel-efficiency, comfort and safety features have been all upgraded. Known by the project name LM, it took 36 months and 280 billion won (approx. US$225 million) to develop.

It comes with a 2-litre engine: either the all-new diesel R or gasoline Theta-ll and is fitted with Hyundai's all-new six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engine meets the Euro-5 emissions standards and achieves 15.4 kilometers per liter fuel economy with maximum power output of 184 horsepower.

The gasoline engine has a fuel economy of 11.7 kilometers per liter with a 166 horsepower. The diesel engine is offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive configurations, while gasoline engine is available only in frmt-wheel-drive.

Named after a city in the U.S state of Arizona, Tucson has been one of the most popular Hyundai models with more than 1 million units sold wordwide since its launch in 2004.

Some of the notable features of Tucson are as follows: Vehicle Dynamic Control: improves the safety of a vehicle's stability by detecting and minimizing skids Downhill Brake Control and Hill-Start Assist Control: DBC allows the vehicle to maintain a safe speed on steep declines without having to use the brake while the hill-stast assist helps a driver move up a steep or slippery hil without rolling backwards.

The Korean domestic market Tucson ix is built in the Ulsan plant while the European edition (to be badged as the ix35) will be built in Europe with production and sales commencing in Europe early next year. Full details about European powertrains, trim levels and option packages will be announced September 3rd on the eve of the 2009 IAA in Frankfurt. North American Specifications will be announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this year.

Toyota will show off the new FT-86 'Toyobaru' - its new joint project with Subaru to build an affordable, rear-wheel drive sports coupe. The FT-86 will from the centrespiece of the 2009 Tokyo motor show later this month.

Although dubbed a concept car, CAR understands the new Toyota FT-86 is in fact a near-production ready model that will launch Toyota back into the sports coupe market to battle the VW Scirocco and Honda CRZ. It's pretty compact at just 4160mm long and 1760mm wide, making it smaller than a TT or Scirocco.

The FT-86-hachi roku in Japanese-seats five and its design clearly draws from the dramatic Toyota FT-HS hybrid sports concept shown at the 2007 Detroit show. The nose in particular borrows the white bombshell's snowplough front end and surfacing familiar to owners of the diddy Toyota iQ. Unlike the FT-HS which was designed in the US, the FT-86 is credited to Toyota's French ED2 studio.

What's that Toyota FT-86 name all about?

It referencer the Corolla AE-86, a rear-drive coupe that became Japan's rally car in the 1980. The Mk2 Escort from the East, if you will, and it's gone on to great things in the Jap drift scene.

Make no mistake, Toyota could be on to a good thing making the FT-86 rear-drive. All the existing competition in the £20k bracket sports coupe market are front drive, sharing hatchback underpinnings. The fast Toyota stands out.

New Jaguar XF Station Wagon to appear in September Show?

More rumours are circulating on the net regarding Jaguar possibly launching a station wagon (or Estate as the UK like to call it) version of the fantastic XF model.

The Image above is photoshop job unfortunately but it's a very good effort, ans shows just how an XF station wagon could look.

The image is taken from Auto Express magazine who have a varying reputation for their "scoops" -some extremely accurate, some less so - but we like this one so we thought we'd show it - you can find a link to the original article below.

It runs along the lines that the only other station wagon version of a Jaguar ever launched - the X-Type, was more of a lifestyle car rather than a true load lugger, and it's expected that the XF would follow the same thinking, and have similiar space to say a BMW 5 series rather than the more spacious Audi A6 Avant.

Rumours suggest Jaguar could show this car at the Frankfurt motor show in Germany in September, but with the new Jaguar XJ so close to launch, it may be doubtful that Jaguar would show 2 new products at the same show, so the XF Station Wagon may have to wait until next year.

With sales of big SUV's dropping in the US, this has prompted many buyers back into station wagon models, which may be what has prompted Jaguar to look again at this model.

BMW Launches Diesel Sipping 320d EfficientDynamics Sedan in Europe

Want a premium sedan that won't hurt the environment? BMW has the answer with its 320d EfficientDynamics model--but only if you in Europe.

The new 320d ED model will debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show in September. While a 320d had been offered in the past, the old car was nowhere as stingy on fuel as the new 320d ED model.

To create the most efficient premium compact sedan, BMW started with its already efficient 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine and added a number of technologies that embody its EfficientDynamics range.

The 320d ED receives optimized aerodynamics, an extra-long final drive ratio, and an innovative dual-mass flywheel. Also improwing fuel consumption are eletric power steering, a shift light, and start/stop system that sources its power through regerative braking.

These changes help make BMW the first automaker to crack the 110 grams of C02 per kilometer emissions mark with a premium compact sedan.

The 320d ED emits 109 grams per kilometer, which renders it eligible for special tax exemptions in some EU countries. The car also returns 57 mpg combined on the European test cycle, a substantial improvement over the base 320d's 49 mpg rating.

Luckily for the European consumer, these features don't add a premium to the pricetag. The new 320d ED is expected to sticker at approximately $42.000, which is roughly the same cost as the previous 320d.

2010 Audi S4 Review

Sporty-level sedan lineup, the A4, was redesigned for last year, but the high-performance s4 variant remained unchanged for 2009. Audi took the new-and
-improved 2010 s4, which arrives on dealer lots with the new-generation A4's styling and a powerful supercharged V-6 engine.

The 2010 Audi S4 sedan features styling that is very similiar to that of the latest-generation A4, and Motor Trend reviewers love the "fresh lines" on this single-trim model.
Overall styling changes are minor, and Road & Track points out that a "subtle front grille and rear decklid s4 badging..Are essentially the only tell-tales" that distinguish the s4.

Out back, sharp-eyed observers will also notice the quad-exhaust treatment, though overall Automobile Magazine agrees that the Audi S4 "look unexpectedly understated."

The one element that will turn heads, however, is the front headlight treatment; it gets Audi's characteristc "LED running lights," which Cars.com reviews say "are very good at grabbing the attention of oncoming motorists." Unlike the European version of the S4, which comes in two body styles, Cars.com reports that the 2010 Audi S4 is "offered only as a sedan and not an Avant wagon."

Subtle yet effective changes are evident throughout the interior of the 2010 Audi S4, according to reviews read by TheCarConnection.com. Motor Trend notices that "Audi has added sport seats with pull-out thigh support, a new instrument panel," and a choice of four different interior trim levels.

The overall layout wins praise as well, with Left Lane News reviewers mentioning that the Audi's "relatively logical controls" are "considerably more user-friendly than even the latest variant of BMW's iDrive."

ConsumerGuide reviewers love the control layout as well, reporting that the 2010 Audi S4's "gauges are clear and well-lit," although the "automatic climate system is a bit complex."

Jaguar pulls out of CTS-V Challenge

Jaguar hasn't really put a foot wrong on the PR front for quite a while. The XJ launch-although we took the Michel-was a very cleverly run campaign, and Jaguar are always responsive to requests (unless you want official gen on possible future models!). But Jaguar's PR guys in the US do seem to have dropped a bit of clanger over the CTS-V Challenge issued by Bob Lutz.

Lutz is 'Mr GM' in the US. A veteran of the industry and a man who not only doesn't suffer fools glady but is very willing to say so. A breath of fresh air some, a pain in the arse for others. Lutz laid down a challenge recently for car journos to take on the Cadillac CTS-V over 5 laps at Monticello Motor Club race track in New York tomorrow (29th October). Bring on whatever you want and we'll see who wins, he challenged.

Out of the gate came Jalopnik, seemingly with the backing of Jaguar, who were willing to supply the Jaguar XFR for the challenge. Hats off to Jag we though, especially as Mercedes Audi, Porsce, BMW et al bottled the challenge. But now so has Jaguar.

Stuart Schorr, Jaguar's US guy, said:

"...I was concerned that five hot laps without added brake cooling system could compromise the stopping power and thus create a safety concern for your driver. The car can handle it. The CTS-V is probably the fastest car of the class on the track, whether it's the best car of its class is a different matter."

Which is a perfectly valid point. There's no doubt that the wily Mr Lutz wouldn't have opened his mouth and made the challenge unless he was pretty certain he could win. It seems clear that the CTS-V- all 556bhp V8-ness of it-will handle the track conditions better than just about anything else likely so step up to the mark.

But the daftness here is accepting the challenge in the first place. The XFR is a far more desirable car than the CTS-V. Unless you want to do 5 mad laps round the track.

2009 Nissan Maxima gets teased in advance of New York debut

Nissan's all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima is making its world bow at the New York show next week, and Nissan has released a couple of shots in an effort to build anticipation for the car in advance of the Maxima's Big Apple debut.

From what we can glean from the teaser images, there have been numerous changes to the Maxima's front and rear fascias, along with should make for a more aggressive look to the front of the car especially. Another interesting feature to note is the 4DSC badge on the rear window, which stands for 4 Door Sports Car.

The present generation Maxima strayed some from its sporty heritage, largely in an effort to tone the car down and make it more of an all-around sedan -- much to the chagrin of Nissan purists.

And the front drive car is a torque-steer monster. But since the Altima has taken on the role of everyday sedan for Nissan in its U.S lineup, here's hoping that the Maxima will return in a big way to its sport-themed roots, and that Nissan's engineers have addressed the current car's handling issues. Perhaps with a RWD or AWD setup? Now that would be a 4DSC.

There's nothing wrong with the Honda Civic Type R, but if you ever felt that it needed an extra bit of poke to truly challenge its hot hatch brethren, be glad that its time has finally come courtesy of tge engineering wizards from Mugen.

We've known all along that Honda's in-house performance tuning division Mugen had been hard at work to b>develop the Type R to even higher levels of naturally-aspirated insanity,
but the Japanese firm kept tight-lipped about the details until it confirmed that a limited run of the Type R Mugen would be made available for the United Kingdom.

Hand-built in the UK and coated in "Championship White" (Honda's traditional racing colour), the Type R Mugen boasts a new rear wing for increased downforce, and composite side skirts as well as a custom grille with integrated Mugen badge.

To further distinguish the Type R Mugen, it will also wear a special badge on the centre console that lists the serial number of each unique model.

An optional "Track Pack" sees the addition of Recaro race-style seats up front and the removal of the rear seats, as well as water and oil temperature
pressure gauges to go with the oil pressure gauge. Data recording equipment and road-legal track tyres are also included.

Mugen engineers have squeezed 177 kW and 213 N.m of torque at 8 300 and 6 250 r/min respectively from the familiar K20A 2,0-litre 16-
valve four-cylinder engine through the use of high-performance camshafts, new pistons, and optimised intake and exhaust systems.

With power sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, Honda claims that the Type R Mugen sprints to 100 km/h from Zero in 6,0 seconds on its way to a top speed of 240 km/h.

Handling has also been tweaked considerably with the use of a limited-slip differential, a revised suspension set-up with custom springs and dampers and four-piston brake calipers, which hide behind a set of light-alloy wheels which weigh just less than 8 kg apiece.

"Each Type R Mugen will be an excluse, hand-built race car for the road. When we launched the Civic Type RR saloon in Japan, we sold out of all 300 units in just six minutes,"
said Mugen Europe Vice President Hiroki Toyoda, who hopes for similiar success with the R Mugen.

2010 BMW X1: New SUV hits The Road in Europe, is set for 2011 U.S Debut

BMW has been spectacular in its reinvention during the past decade. It moved away from traditional volume-selling models, often becoming the first European luxury-car maker to enter important new market niches-much to the chagrin of Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which have attempted to follow its lead.

But if you thought BMW had every luxury niche covered, think again. With the arrival of the X1, it has become the first European luxury-car maker to male a compact SUV, setting up a likely sales battle againts class favorites such as the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V and, from the Europe perspective, the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Ford Kuga.

Slotting beneath the X3--whic will grow in size, performance, features and price when a U.S-built, second-generation model arrives next year--the X1 represent another part of BMW's plan to achieve more than 2 million sales annually by 2020. It isn't set to reach North American Showrooms until mid-2011, 18 months after it goes on sale in Europe but ahead of the planned arrival of rivals such as the upcoming Audi Q3, Range Rover LRX and Marcedes BLK.

The exterior shape of the X1 was first revealed on lightly veiled concept at the 2008 Paris motor show. The new four-door follows the BMW trend toward taut surfacing, edgy detailing and provocative shutline architecture. The smallest of BMW's X-cars is slightly shorter and narrower but taller than the 3-series Touring, the wagon version of BMW's most popular model, with which the X1 shares its 108.7-inch wheelbase and much of its mechanical hardware, engines included.

The X1's interior doesn't break new ground. It's similiar to the 1-series in the apperance of the dashboard, instruments, switcgear and various trims. Large sections of soft-touch plastic are placed higher up. But the overall feel is cheapened by the dark, hard plastic below the line of sight, notably within the center console.

The driver sits slightly higher than in the 1-series, behind a thick-rimmed steering wheel. Forward vision over the contoured hood is excellent, but the kick-up in the rear side window and the heavily angled taigate limit rear vision. BMW offers a rear-mounted camera as part of the optional satellite navigation and entertainment system.

The X1 has reasonable space, but with its longitudinally mounted engine, it can't compete with rivals whose transverse engines allow for more interior space. In headroom, shoulder room and legroom, the X1 is on par with the 3-series (the X1 has more headroom). The rear seatbacks adjust in angle and are split 40/20/40/, letting you fold the middle space for two adults in back. But the trunk is small by class standards.

For our first drive of the X1 around Leipzig, Germany, BMW provided a single model, the xDrive 20d. It might not hold great relevance to the North American market, which is expected to get a combination of four-and six-cylinder gasoline -powered models.

But with a 2.0-liter, common-rail diesel four-cylinder providing 177 hp 258 lb-ft of torque and standard four-wheel drive, it is easy to see why the model is expected to account for the majority of X1 sales across Europe.

Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano got a complete redesign, with a cleaner, sleeker look on the outside (except for the controversial grille), along with a more sophisticated-looking interior. Overall, reviewers are split over some of the details on the Murano, but responses are way more positive than negative.

Reviewers have plenty to say about the exterior styling of the 2010 Nissan Murano. AutoWeek likes the "cleaner look," while Cars.com thinks "the Murano's nose looks like a cross between the previous generation and the smaller Rogue crossover," and counters that the "rear end isn't as bulbous." MyRide dissects the Murano's styling and compares it to the 2007 version (Nissan skipped the 2008 model year as it prepared the new version).

MyRide notes the headlights form a horizontal line with the grille now, while the fenders have "a strong-shouldered appearance." They also point out the climbing line down the side of the Murano, and its "clean new tail design," with standard LED tail lamps, so it's not all bad.

Automobile is one of the few sources to critize some details-like the grille-lobbing catcalls at the Murano's "crooked chrome teeth, "the ridiculously oversize badging."

With the redesign that the Nissan Murano received last year, Nissan kept the interior virtually the same but completely restyled the instrument panel. MyRide asserts the new interior is "along the lines of what buyers might expect behind an infiniti badge," and notes the integrition of the gauges and the more upscale materials.

Autoblog says, "Softer plastics are found everywhere one might reasonably be expected to put a hand." They also compliment the Murano's dash, remarking "the new orange-lighted instrument cluster is a welcome improvement, as is the more ergonomic and eye-pleasing center stack."

AutoWeek approves of the Nissan Murano's interior, calling it "warm and modern, with simple, easy-to-navigate controls, abundant storage and good build quality." Car and Driver sums it up by noting that style-wise, the Murano's interior has "gone from class lagging to class leading."

Mission Critical: Detroit Three Betting Big on New Taurus, 300, LaCrosse Sedans

While the spotlight at this year's North American International Auto Show may be shining on an assortment of futuristic hybrids and battery cars,
the Detroit Three are putting their real bets down on a trio of relatively conventional sedans that could help determine the fate of Detroit's troubled manufacturers.

Between them, the 2010 Ford Taurus, Chrysler 300 and Buick LaCrosse could redefine the passenger car. But they could also blur the line between mainstream and luxury products, as each is equipped with the sort of advanced technology normally reserved for significantly more expensive products.

When the Taurus hits showrooms, mid-year, it might evoke a sense of deja vu, for when the original car bearing that name debuted, in 1986, it was arguably one of the most important cars for Ford since the legendary Model T.

The automaker was in a financial crisis as challenging as the one it faces today, and the failure of that first Taurus might have capsized the company, according to analyst Joe Phillipi, of Auto Trends Consulting.

The '86 was a major success, outselling even such vaunted imports as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. But over the coming years, Ford seemed to lose interest in its midsize mainstay, and by the beginning of this decade,
the bulk of production was earmarked for rental and corporate fleets. Ford finally pulled Taurus from production, then brought the nameplate back on a rebadged version of the unloved Five Hundred.

Now, the company hopes to match the excitement of the original, and with the 2010 sedan, "You wouldn't be stretching the point to call it a make-it-or-break-it car," all over again, said Phillipi.

Unlike the most recent car to bear the Taurus name, the new model is visually dynamic, and it's loaded with an assortment of high-tech features -- from radar-guided cruise control to an automatic parking system -- one might otherwise expect on high-line products like the lates BMW 7-Series.

"We came to the conclusion that being good wasn't good enough," explained Mark Fields, Ford's President of the Americas.

Will the Next Suzuki Swift Come to the U.S.?

Suzuki's top engineer, Takashi Nakayama, won't say if the next Suzuki Swift will come to the U.S., but he did hint that the car is being developed to meet U.S. Crash and emissions regulations, saying it is "tehnically possible" to meet the regs with the next car, due out in 2011.

American Suzuki needs the Swift bad. Right now the company is concentrating on getting the mid-size Kizashi launched in December. But once that hoopla dies down, Suzuki will still have only four main vehicles in its lineup,
the SX4 hatchback, SX4 sedan, Kizashi, and Grand Vitara.

Suzuki also sells a version of the Nissan Frontier called Equator, but in tiny volumes. Meanwhile, the current Swift sells brisky in Japan and Europe and is a hoot to drive, as our brief encounters with it prove.

It's currently the best product in the company's lineup, but at the Suzuki deciped not to bring it to the U.S., fuel prices were low and buyers were swarming to trucks.
In light of $4.50/gallon gasoline that came later, Suzuki admits it was a mistake. Let's hope they correct it this time around.

Mazda's Next-Gen Rotary Not Up To Scratch

With the RX-8 being the only car on the market with a rotary engine, fans have worried that Mazda may dump its fuel hungry rotary and concentrate on traditional engines like its new SKY
range. Those worries were put to rest back in 2007 when Mazda previewed a new rotary design dubbed the 16X in its Taiki concept car.

Unfortunately, the 16X isn't quite up to scratch in terms of meeting Mazda's aggressive fuel economy goals. The automaker has set itself the challenge of improving its average fuel economy of vehicles 30% by 2015 compared to 2008 levels.

This means that it will need some further work before it could be offered in a production model. Speaking with reporters at this past week's 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda R&D boss Seita Kanai explained that the 16X demonstrated the possibility, but admitted that performance was not good enough.

"The 16X is more a profile of a rotary still in our concept stage," Kanai said. "It needs more evolution."

The 16X is a 1.6-liter twin rotor unit similiar to the current 1.3-liter 13B found in the RX-8. It features a longer stroke and larger displacement (800cc x 2) design and is said to be more

thermal efficient than the 13B engine. The 16X also features direct injection technology and lightweight aluminum side housing to further help reduce fuel consumtion.

There's no word on when we'll the 16X in production trim but the most likely scenario will see its introduction in the next-generation RX-8 sports car around 2011.

Honda Accord More Dynamic

Honda Accord car dynamic for customers, convenient in US. A recent series of car version of the Accord will be present in the American market. Last November, we spied a tall, widened Honda Accord mule that used the front end the U.S. Accord and the body of the European Accord Tourer wagon to cover an all-new, Toyota Venza fighting crossover. Now, thanks to a snap-happy Tennessee tourist, we bring you the final product.

Expected to be called Crosstour, it is seen here covered only by a front-end mask and some bits oe tape that actually show more than they cover. (Note to Honda: Don't take your top-secret development cars to the same places that attract camera-totin' tourist.)

As seen on this prototype, the CUV's front end will clearly be similiar to that of the four-door Accord, although we can tell there has been some butching-up of the graphic elements beneath the thick tarps.
A side swoosh similiar to the Accord sedan's passes through door handles borrowed from that model.

Where the Crosstour really goes its own way, however, is aft of the B-pillar, where the window line rises to point and the rear end slopes down to form a hatchback.
The shape of the rear end appears to have necessitated the addition of a second, Insight-esque lower rear window to salvage some outward vision.

Under the skin, we expect the Crosstour to be a mix of Accord and Accord-based Pilot mechanicals, with all-wheel-drive models using a version of the system found in Honda's SUVs.
Engine choices will likely include a four-cylinder engine with at least 200 hp (possibly turbocharged) and a 3.5-liter V-6.

What strikes us most about these shots is just how closely the new CUV's slant-back profile resembles that of Acura's polarizing ZDZ crossover, which itself is a distant cousin of the Accord.

The sloping deck will both restrict cargo space somewhat compared with traditional crossover and invite plenty of controversy-a surprising dare-to-be-different
approach that is noteworthy from conservative Honda, especially given the American aversion to hatchbacks.

Princing will likely start at about $25K, with well-appointed models reaching into the mid- to high-thirties. We expect the Crosstour to go on sale late this year as a 2010 model.

MTM To Cars Audi S4 Avant

MTM is not known for its restraint - it is, after all, the same company that fitted two enginess into an Audi Tt to set a speed record at Nardo. Its engineers have now taken the tuner's brand of high-power, no-holds-barred modification to the internal workings of thd new Audi S4 Avant, already one of the most potent of the Audi S cars.

Just on the market, MTM has injected the new 3.0L supercharged S4 with more power and driving dynamics. The V6 engine in the standard version comes with a respectable 333hp (248kW) on tap, but it really comes alive after the MTM treatment. With this package the modified S4 is able to challenge the bigger RS models with their V8 engines. A total of 430hp (320kW) and 380lb-ft (515Nm) of torque was measured on the MTM dynamometer.

With drive sent to all four whells via a six-speed manual gearbox and quattro AWD, the modified S4 will sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds-0.4 seconds faster than the stock version.

Beside improved performance, MTM also offers for the S4 a custom exhaust kit, bimoto wheels (19 and 21in) and MTM height adjustable suspension and performance brakes. This latter element comes with 380mm discs and 8-piston calipers.

There's a new reason to drink plenty of water and skim milk: Both may help to prevent painful gout attacks, new studies show.

"With gout, we spend a lot of time telling patients what they can't do -- to avoid beer and red meat, for example," says University of Auckland rheumatologist Nicola Dalbeth, MD, who headed the milk study.

"It's useful to have something we can tell them they can do" to help control their disease, she tells WebMD.

The studies were presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

Gout, a type of arthritis that occurs most frequently in overweight, middle-aged men, is caused by the buildup of uric acid and needle-like crystal in the joints.

While there is certainly a genetic link to the disease, there is no question that lifestyle is a key contributing factor.

One recently identified trigger for the painful attacks is dehydration. So researches set out to determine if drinking water could be an antidote.

Using ads on Google, the researchers recruited 535 people who said they had a gout attack within the past year. Participants' medical records were used to confirm the diagnosis.

Within two days of an attack, participants logged onto a special web site and answered questions about what they ate and drank in the 24 hours preceding the attack. Then, they were asked to log in another time, when they were gout-free, and answer the same questions.

Reducing Risk of Gout's Return
Results showed the more water they drank, the lower their risk of recurrent gout attacks.

"For example, having five to eight glasses of water in the past 24 hours was associated with a 40% lower risk of having a gout attack, compared with drinking none or one glass of water in the past day,"
says Tuhina Neogi, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

Neogi stresses that people with gout shouldn't substitute water for other treatments their doctors prescribe.

"But this suggests that dehydration may indeed be an important trigger for gout attacks, and that drinking water may be a simple intervention to help reduce the risk of recurrent attacks," she tells WebMD.

Previous studies have shown that people who drink a lot milk have a lower risk of developing gout, Dalbeth says.

So she and colleagues decided to study the effects of skim milk on blood urib acid concentrations, which, when evelated, raise the risk of gout.

The researchers collected blood and urine samples from 16 volunteers immediately before they drank soy or skim milk and then hourly over three-hour period.

Sebastian Vettel admits his title chances rest on Red Bull doing the bert possible job in the last two races of the season whilst hoping rivals Brawn GP slip up.

The German heads into Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix as the man in form having scored a dominant victory last time out in japan.

Even so, his success at Suzuka means the 22-year-old still stands 16 points behind championship leader Jenson Button, with the latter's Brawn GP team-mate, Ruben's Barrichelo, now two points ahead.

Speaking in Tsurday's press conference at Interlagos, Vattel's suggestion that both Button and Barrichello are under greater presure fell on deaf ears - the Englishman rejecting the notion.

However, with a difficult - but not insurmountable - gap to make up. The 22-year-old knows that his only chance hinges on securiting victories four and five of the season.

"For me it is pretty straightforward - the only thing I can do is win," Vettel said.

"You don't have to be a genius to work out from now on we simply have to win the two races and hope the other two mess it up, so the pressure is on them.

"It is a good thing not to have the situation they are facing. They have to race each other."

Strong showing

Vattel said he anticipated another strong showing in Brazil given the fact his car has shown well in both the last two races - Singapore and Japan also being very different in terms of layout.

He finished fourth in the former race, albeit having run as high as second prior to picking up a penalty for speeding in the pitlane.

"The last two races have been very good for us," he assessed.

"We had a very good package for Singapore, which should have been a bit better.

"But it is in the past now and I am just hoping I don't miss those three points in the end. We will see.

"Obviously Japan was fantastic. The car was great all weekend, so if you look at the last two races, we've been very competitive even though the circuits are very different to each other.

"For here we have another couple of things in the bag, so it sould be good."

Singapore was another case of 'what might have been' for Vattel, who has failed to finish a total of five races this season.

In contrast, both Button and Barrichelo have only retired once - a fact their rival is trying his best to ignore.

Vattel said: "It doesn't help. It's done.

"We cannot change it now, so there is nothing to regret. It's still a good season for us, the best one have had.

"We have to be very positive. Anything is possible."

'Godfather' Crooner Al Martino Dies at 82

Singer Al Martino, who you likely remember as the Sinatra-esque Johnny Fontane in 'The Godfather,' (seen above with microphone) but also had a 50-year music career that produced hits like 'Spanish Eves' and 'Volare,' has died at the age of 82.

Martitno died on Tuesday at his chidhood home in the Philadelhia suburb of Springfield, in Delaware County, according to publicist Sandy Friedman, of the Rogers & Cowan public relations firm. Friedman didn't cite a cause of death.

Starting in 1952, Martino was known for hit songs including "Here in My Heart" and " and "Can't Help Falling in Love."

Besides acting in the Marlon Brando classic "The Godfather," Martino sang the 1972 film's title score, "The Love Theme From The Godfather." His Fontane character is a singer and occasional actor and is the godson of Brando's Mafia boss character, Don Vito Corleone.

The italian-American crooner, born Alfred Cini, was one of a number of South Philadelphia-born singers, including Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Chubby Checker. He also was a longtime resident of Beverly Hills, Calif.

Philadelphia radio and television personality Jerry Blavat dined with Martino and his wife on Monday nigh. Blavat told the Philadelpia Daily News that Martino appeared to be in fine shape and that he was shocked when he learned of the singer's death.

"He was the last of the show business legends, said Blavat, who has played Martino's songs on the radio for years. "There's nobody else. Thd last of the performers. A magnificent voice."

Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an amendment that permits lawsuits agains media outles who pay for material that they know was illegally obtained.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has si
gned an anti-paparazzi bill making it easier to sue media outlets that use photos that invade celebrities' privacy.

The former Terminator star signed an amendment Sunday to a decade-old law that allows fines against paparazzi who illegally or offensively take photos or recordings.
The amendment permits lawsuits againts media outles that pay for and make first use of material they knew was improperly obtained.

Tabloid magazines, TV show and Internet sites sometimes pay millions for celebrity fodder.

In 1998 Schwarzenegger had his car surrounded by paparazzi as he picked up his child from school. Other stars have had car accidents while trying to flee swarms of photograpers.

The amendment takes effect in January.

- LDL (bad) cholesterol levels decreased by an average of 35 mg/dl in those taking red yeast rice, compared with 15 mg/dL in the placebo group

- Total cholesterol levels improved more in the red yeast rice group than the placebo group

Although the researchers acknowledged that the study was small and of short duration, they concluded that red yeast rice, coupled with lifestyl changes, could decrease LDL cholesterol without increasing pain levels or liver or muscle enzyme levels
(as often happens in people taking statin drugs). They recommended the yeast rice as a valid treatment option for people who cannot tolerate statin drugs.

A separate study, this one of 5,000 people who have suffered a heart attack, also found favorable results. Those who took an extract of red yeast rice for years reduced their risk of repeat heart attacks by 45 percent. It also lowered their chances of having a heart procedure such as bypass surgery or angioplasty, and even appeared to reduce their risk of cancer by as much as two-thirds.

What's more, I think such research inadvertently conveys the message that people are somehow to blame for their cancers. With the exeption of smoking and lung cancer, that's simply not the case. (And there are plenty of folks who develop lung cancer and never smoked a day in their life.)

Still, there are some very concrete things we can do to maximize our adds of thwarting breast cancer. "We're not blaming the victim," study leader Susan Higginbotham said on an MSNBC interview posted on the AICR Web site.
